Safari Overview

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a protected region and UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 180 kilometers west of Arusha, in Tanzania's Crater Highlands. The Ngorongoro Crater itself is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera, formed 2-3 million years ago.

Covering 260 square kilometers, the crater floor hosts an astonishing concentration of wildlife — over 25,000 large animals including the rare black rhino, big prides of lions, hyenas, elephants, and flamingo-filled soda lakes. This is often called "Africa's Eden."

Sample 3-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arusha to Ngorongoro

Drive from Arusha to Ngorongoro (4 hours). Stop at a Maasai village. Overnight at a crater-rim lodge with breathtaking views.

Day 2

Crater Floor Game Drive

Early breakfast, descend into the crater. Full day game drive searching for the Big Five. Picnic lunch by the hippo pool. Return to lodge for sunset.

Day 3

Return to Arusha

Visit Olduvai Gorge en route. Drive back to Arusha, or fly to Zanzibar for a beach extension.
